Laura Clay, a woman’s rights leader, was born here. She was president of theKentucky Equal Rights Association and won coeducational, property, and joint guardianship rights for Kentucky women. She also held key positions in National American Woman Suffrage Association.

The marker is located on the grounds of Ashland, the estate of Henry Clay. Breckinridge was the great-granddaughter of Henry Clay, and a cousin to Kentucky suffragist Laura Clay. She served as president of the Kentucky Equal Rights Association (KERA) and was vice-president of the National American Woman Suffrage Association.
